Ozone pools require less chemical maintenance than traditional chlorine pools, but they are not maintenance-free. Understanding what to monitor, when to service your equipment, and how your chemical routine changes with ozone is the difference between a pool that runs beautifully and one that underperforms.

Key difference: If combined chlorine (chloramines) consistently reads above 0.2 ppm, your ozone system may be undersized, running insufficient hours, or experiencing a performance issue. In a properly functioning ozone pool, chloramines should be near zero.
Most generators have an indicator light showing operational status. A quick weekly glance confirms the unit is running. If the light is off or flashing an error code during pump operation, investigate immediately.
Listen for the sound of air being drawn through the venturi when the pump is running. You should hear a faint hissing or gurgling at the injection point. Silence may indicate a clog, loss of suction, or failed check valve.
Check the tubing connecting the generator to the venturi injector for:
Replace tubing at the first sign of degradation. Always use ozone-rated tubing — PTFE, Kynar, or silicone.
Mineral deposits, calcium scale, and debris can accumulate inside the venturi injector over time, reducing suction performance. Remove the venturi and soak it in a mild acid solution (diluted muriatic acid or white vinegar) for 30 minutes, then flush with clean water.
Remove and inspect the check valve between the generator and the venturi. Ensure the flapper or disc moves freely and seats properly. Replace if the valve shows signs of mineral buildup, ozone degradation, or a weak seal.
Ozone improves filter performance by micro-flocculating suspended particles, which means your filter may actually capture more debris than before. Perform a thorough filter clean (backwash, cartridge soak, or DE recharge) every 3–4 months or as pressure gauge indicates.
For corona discharge units: Check the corona discharge cell for discoloration or visible damage. Measure ozone output if your unit has a diagnostic mode. Output declining below 70% of rated capacity indicates the cell needs replacement.
For UV units: Check the UV lamp for darkening or discoloration. Even if the lamp still glows, UV output at 185nm decreases over time. Most manufacturers recommend annual replacement regardless of visible appearance.
Corona discharge generators with integrated air preparation systems use desiccant beads to dry incoming air. Humid air reduces ozone production and can create harmful nitrogen oxides inside the generation chamber.
Check the desiccant indicator (usually a color-changing window). If the beads have changed color from blue to pink (or whatever indicator the manufacturer uses), regenerate or replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
UV ozone generators should have their lamp replaced every 12–18 months, even if the lamp still appears to function. The 185nm wavelength responsible for ozone generation degrades faster than the visible light output. A lamp that glows may produce little to no usable ozone.
