Balanced pool water chemistry is the difference between crystal clear water and a green, cloudy mess. It’s also the difference between equipment that lasts 10+ years and equipment that corrodes in 3. Every pool problem — algae, cloudy water, skin irritation, staining — traces back to chemistry that’s out of balance.
This guide explains what balanced water actually means, the correct order to adjust chemicals, and how to fix every common chemistry problem.
Pool water chemistry revolves around five interconnected parameters. Adjusting one often affects others, so the order of adjustment matters.

Always balance in this order — adjusting out of sequence wastes chemicals and time:
Add: Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
Dose: 1.5 lbs per 10,000 gallons raises TA by ~10 ppm
Steps:
Add: Muriatic acid or dry acid (sodium bisulfate)
Dose: 1 quart muriatic acid per 10,000 gallons lowers TA by ~10 ppm
Lowering TA also lowers pH, so you may need to re-raise pH afterward using aeration (running water features or pointing returns upward to create surface agitation).
Add: Soda ash (sodium carbonate) or borax
Dose: 6 oz of soda ash per 10,000 gallons raises pH by ~0.2
Note: Soda ash also raises TA slightly. If TA is already at the high end, use aeration instead — running a waterfall, spa jets, or pointing returns upward to create surface agitation naturally raises pH without affecting TA.
Add: Muriatic acid or dry acid (sodium bisulfate)
Dose: 1 cup muriatic acid per 10,000 gallons lowers pH by ~0.2

Dose: 1.25 lbs per 10,000 gallons raises CH by ~10 ppm

There is no chemical that removes calcium from pool water. Options:
Add: Cyanuric acid (stabilizer/conditioner)
Dose: 13 oz per 10,000 gallons raises CYA by ~10 ppm
CYA dissolves slowly. Place it in a sock or mesh bag in the skimmer basket and let water flow through it over 24–48 hours. Don’t pour CYA directly into the pool.
Like calcium, CYA can only be reduced by dilution:
CYA and chlorine relationship: The ideal free chlorine level should be approximately 7.5% of your CYA level. At CYA 40, maintain FC at 3 ppm. At CYA 80, you’d need FC at 6 ppm for the same effectiveness — which is why keeping CYA low is important.

Shocking raises chlorine to 10+ ppm to destroy chloramines, organic waste, and algae. Shock when:
Pools with ozone systems need less frequent shocking because ozone continuously oxidizes organic waste. This is one of the key benefits of ozone treatment — less chemical handling and fewer chloramines.

Adding chemicals in the wrong order. Many pool owners adjust chlorine first, then wonder why it doesn’t work — because pH is too high. Always balance alkalinity and pH before adjusting chlorine.
Never mix chemicals directly. Add one chemical at a time, with the pump running, and wait at least 15–30 minutes between additions. Some chemicals (like chlorine and acid) create dangerous reactions if mixed.
