The EPA finalized the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) in October 2024, lowering the lead action level from 15 ppb to 10 ppb and requiring every U.S. utility to replace the entire lead service line whenever a partial replacement happens. If your home was built before 1986, there is a non-trivial probability that the line connecting your house to the municipal main contains lead — and your utility is now legally obligated to identify and replace it.

The standard Brita pitcher filter does NOT remove lead. However, the Brita Elite (formerly Longlast) filter is NSF 53 certified for lead reduction. Make sure you’re using the correct filter type.

No — and it makes the problem worse. Boiling concentrates lead by evaporating clean water and leaving the dissolved metal behind. Lead is non-volatile, so the only way to remove it from drinking water is mechanical filtration with NSF 53 or NSF 58 certified media.
